蒸汽机车问世以来，曾经出现过四种类型的阀装置，它们是史氏阀、贝氏阀、华氏阀和特氏阀。新中国成立前后我国使用的蒸汽机车绝大部分是华氏阀机车，世界最早的蒸汽机车是法国工程师库格诺发明的。1769年，库格诺为牵引大炮而制造了第一台蒸汽机车。车身是木制的，车的前部设有一个梨形锅炉，后面有两个汽缸，它只在普通路面上行驶。虽然极其简陋，与后来的蒸汽机车相差甚远，但却是人类第一辆自驱动车辆，可以被认为是蒸汽机车的鼻祖。
