Generally speaking, airships can be divided into three types from a structural perspective: rigid airships, semi-rigid airships, and flexible airships. A rigid airship is an airship whose shape and rigidity are maintained by its internal skeleton (made of metal or wood, etc.), covered with skin on the outside, and equipped with many independent gas filled airbags inside the skeleton to provide lift for the airship. The shape of a semi-rigid airship is mainly maintained by the gas pressure in the airbags, and the other part also relies on a rigid skeleton. In the 1920s, an Italian made semi-rigid airship passed through the North Pole on its way from Norway to Alaska, becoming the first aircraft in human history to reach the North Pole.
