水井对于人类文明的发展有着重大意义。水井出现之前,人类逐水而居,只能生活于有地表水或泉的地方.水井的发明使人类活动范围扩大。中国是世界上开发利用地下水最早的国家之一。中国已发现最早的水井是浙江余姚河姆渡古文化遗址水井，其年代为距今约5700年。这是一口相当精巧的方形木结构井，井深1.35米，边长为2米。由此推断，原始形态的井的出现，还要早得多。
