邮轮的原意是指海洋上的定线、定期航行的大型客运轮船。“邮”字本身具有交通的含义，而且过去跨洋邮件总是由这种大型快速客轮运载，故此得名。
第二次世界大战后多数军用工业向民用工业转型，航空业随之出现并飞速发展。原来的跨洋型邮轮相比航空运输，速度慢、消耗时间长，逐渐退出了历史舞台。
通常所说的邮轮，实际上是指在海洋中航行的旅游客轮。
